the gt wing thread

so I need a little schooling on this. How do you pick the right one? Is bigger better?

I do know your better off mounting it to the quarters or through it to the inside of the trunk.

Size is a function of a cars speed, slipstream, rules, and force you are looking to generate. I'd figure out about how much force you want to generate and go from there. There might be some articles about 240 race cars with wings on them. 72" is about the standard for corvettes because they are SO wide!

As for mounting, to the frame/chassis is the best, but I'd say on a unibody car, any strong part of the chassis if fine, NOT the trunk. I know my wing will create 500+lbs of downforce and that will shatter my hatch, lol!

Definately here is an article from APR i am not using this perticular unit BUT its similar AND they have good info for ya!

The main GT wing page has recomendations for which wing depending on your speed and vehicle ISH....its just a quick guide nothing id use to make my choice on a 1700dollar wing

Check this out

READ THIS stuff to get a little more info on HOW and what the aspects of the wing do and how they will affect YOU and your perticular setup:

And check this out

Some advanced info there but i think youll probably be able to make out the info its better than nothing and a decent start!

Once you are above any chance of turbulance, height doesnt do much. It can have an effect on rotating the chassis upwards in the front but only in extreme examples (think top fueler). APRs have their shape to try and work with sloping roof lines better. Notice how the wing angle is steeper in the center to deal with the wind coming off the roof and flatter on the sides where they anticipate cleaner and more horizontal/undisturbed airflow.

Here's some interesting info. It shows the amount of DF per foot of a given wing at a given angle and at given speeds. Click a wing and then click DF/drag data......

There was some discussion on wing height on EVOM and I posted there a few days back

I have these magazines, so if you want better resolution photos of the graphs let me know.

wings

Though APR does have really data on their site, you guys should really look up a book called COMPETITION AERODYNAMICS, by SIMON MCBEATH.

He does a right up on Racecar Engineering, magazine every month.

There is a wealth of information in this book, and now consider it my aero mod bible.

And a quick note on wings. besides all the differant designs he goes into, he does mention that the more swept the roof is on a car, I:E vette, viper, lotus, etc.. you really should keep your wing a little closer to the body.

On sedans, you should get them where the the air is much cleaner, meaning higher.

While what mcbeath says (and I have a huge respect for that guy) is correct in terms of efficiency but... The whole rest of the car isn't being mentioned there, power levels, body shape, form drag it all has a huge effect. Sometimes I have to tell myself the goal isnt a peak efficiency aero package, its a faster car.. and those two are not always the same thing. In the back of the car there are so many relationships that dictate that stuff, shape of the decklid and the diffuser design. The wing can be designed to leverage the air flow at different heights as well. There's a lot to consider I think more than just that and the interactions are SO strong in that part of the car you can see big swings and totally unpredicted results if you get it wrong. I think its really tough to make hard and fast rules back there.

If bigger isn't better, then why did they make this?
