The majority of our snow comes from lake effect, which is when the warm moisture rising from the great lakes moves over land and gets dumped on us as snow. Buffalo gets their snow from lake erie, which freezes over fairly quickly, so they get a lot of snow early in the season and then it quits. We get our snow from lake ontario, which doesnt freeze because of how deep it is...so although we dont get as much in the very beginning of the year, we quickly catch up to and then pass Buffalo every year. For the whole area it gets cold enough that nothing melts and thats where you see the pictures of ~10 ft snow walls on the side of roads.

Buffalos average is 97, ours is 121, but in the 10 years Ive lived here we've never had that little, and in fact the average has risen quite a bit recently...but yeah this is looking like it will be the first year I've lived here where we don't beat our average by a large margin.

OK it's interesting Buffalo gets the press for big snow.

Yeah actually theres an article on Yahoo right now saying Cleveland gets the worse winters...I was like wtf and then I read their definition of bad, looks like somebody who never saw a snowflake in their life wrote the article haha.

But yeah Im not quite sure why you always here about Buffalo, I notice it too and like I said its all I hear anytime I leave the area.

And then another 15 inches showed up. This is a record for DC. Official is 59.x inches. Been a blast getting around. This is the exit out of my development.

wow, absolutely ridiculous how much is left on the roads...my dads heading down to DC and I think I might come with him, because it looks like I could clear things faster with my snow blower than your counties can with plows

here's a pic of my neighborhood the day after we got 30" a couple years ago, the banks about ~9 ft tall, but notice the roads clear

Roads were closed so plows were diverted we think. It is bad though. I almost got stuck in 4WD trucks several times today. Each time in my neighborhood. Closest thing I get these days to four wheeling.
