A recent addition to the 2008 time attack schedule, the Formula X time attack was quite the event! Operated by Redline Time Attack and run in conjunction with Formula Atlantic and Star Mazda racing series this was the first time attack even in the US to offer a cash purse to the winners of each division! The event limited registration to cars that fit within the current Redline Time Attack Street and Modified class rules only. The event was held at the brand new New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville New Jersey and offered a combined amount of $7,500.00 in cash prizes thanks to Mazda!
Philip Grabow and Element Tuning got to work on their Unlimited AWD Subaru STI before the event to make it legal for the Modified AWD class and the work paid off. Element Tuning took home the overall, overall Modified, and Modified AWD class wins with their Modified AWD STI turning in a lap time of 1:30.830. Not only did they take home wins in Modified, but Element Tuning also took home the overall Street and Street AWD victories in their new 2008 Subaru STI. The wins netted Element Tuning $2,500.00 in cash prizes provided by Mazda.
Since Unlimited class cars weren't able to compete it was the Modified class that stole the show in New Jersey! As mentioned earlier, Philip Grabow in the Element Tuning Subaru STI dominated the class but hot on his heels was James Elterman in the Takata Time Attack Subaru STI claiming 2nd in Modified AWD. Modified RWD went to Robert "Robi" Fuller in the Robispec / Team Philthy Infiniti G35 coupe with a 1:33.468. Darren Mingus took home silver in Modified RWD with his Porsche 911 running a 1:37.443 while bronze went to Ken Tun in his Porsche GT3 with a 1:40.623. Justin Crenshaw in the PTuning Scion xA ran un-opposed in the Modified FWD class posting a time of 1:48.500
The Street class was once again the largest of the classes. Street AWD went to Philip Grabow in the Element Tuning 2008 Subaru STI with a time of 1:39.023, just ahead of the Mitsubishi Evolution of Alex Sharanevych who clocked in at a 1:39.854. Third place in Street AWD went to Eric Cheng with a time of 1:43.878. Street RWD went to Thomas Mak with a time of 1:39.657 followed by the RightFootDown.com BMW M3 of Josh Brozen with a 1:44.190. Third place in Street RWD went to Giovanni Fana's BC Racing Infiniti G35 with a 1:48.447. Street FWD was owned by Douglas Wind in his Continental Tire / Trackpedia Dodge Neon SRT-4 with a 1:40.042 a full eleven seconds ahead of his only competition, Justin Crenshaw in the PTuning Scion xA.
This event was a big step in the right direction for the sport of time attack racing and it is very exciting to know that the big name manufacturers are starting to pay more attention to the sport. Although this was not a points earning event for the Redline Time Attack Series, the chase will continue at the 2008 Redline Time Attack Finals in conjunction with GT Live at Virginia International Raceway October 3rd-5th. Be sure to check back and see which team gets crowned the first ever Redline Time Attack Series Champion!
